Our Backyard

Predator Free Riccarton encompasses critical areas of biodiversity including Riccarton Bush/Pūtaringamotu along tributaries of the Avon-Ōtakaro waterways. We have over 30 schools in our area and the University of Canterbury. Our backyard is home to a diverse range of people and communities.

A gem within our zone, home to the last stand of podocarp forest on the Canterbury Plains. 600 year old kahikatea, tōtara, mataī and hīnau trees tower in the 12 hectare bush in the heart of Riccarton, showing how Canterbury once looked. A predator free fence wraps around the 7.8 hectares of bush providing a haven for native species. The bush is protected by the Riccarton Bush Act.

Our backyard is already home to many native species that we are protecting.
