Our goal is to create an environment that promotes the growth and diversity of our native species. The Riccarton community includes green spaces, such as Riccarton Bush and corridors bordering tributaries of the Avon River, which could form sanctuaries for our native species to thrive, but this isn’t possible with current pest populations. We are striving to make change, this starts in the backyards of our community.
We are aiming to eradicate introduced pests, such as rats and mice, through our backyard trapping project. This would mean more native birds (Pīwakawaka/Fantail, Korimako/Bellbird, Kererū/NZ Wood Pigeon), insects (Wētā, butterflies) and reptiles in our community members.
How can you help? We are aiming to get one trap in every five backyards!
Our project is supported by the Predator Free NZ Backyard Communities Fund. This has given us the opportunity to heavily subsidise traps for our community.
